I’m So Tired!

The most common words that seem to come out of high-schoolers’ mouths these days are, “I’m so tired!” We are stressed, kept up for much of the night with all the homework and studying that is being piled on us. And sometimes we just can’t fall asleep because we are stressed. This is all true, and very difficult to deal with. But, if we are being honest with ourselves, the amount of work that we have probably wouldn’t keep us up until midnight or later if it weren’t for today’s worst enemy: the smart phone.

How many of us stay up for hours watching videos on youtube, or TV shows on Netflix? We do this for hours, and then we do homework. And then the next day we are exhausted from having stayed up too late. We drift off in class, miss important information, get cranky, promise we will go to bed earlier that night, and then the vicious cycle starts all over again as soon as we get home.

I propose this: don’t waste so much time. We should go home, take a shower, eat dinner, do our work, watch ONE thing to relax a bit, and then go to sleep. Maybe take a few five-minute breaks every half hour or so. It might take some time for those five-minute breaks to stop turning into half-hour breaks, but I have faith in us! There’s no denying that this change will take time and effort, but I believe that it can be done, and that we will all be happier because of it.

The life of a high schooler is hard. There are math sheets to do, tests to study for, projects to get done—and TV shows to enjoy! But we must prioritize. And as much as I hate to admit it, while the school year is going on, homework is the priority. There will be more TV shows to watch in the future, and we can always buy or rent them for another time. And while sometimes schoolwork will keep us up past midnight, we will all get more sleep if we limit our screen time. If we do that, perhaps the words, “I’m so tired,” won’t be heard as often with such intensity.
